Success only runs one direction....

As I load up my sleigh and head home to celebrate Christmas, I’d like to leave you with a true story, introduced to me by Ilene Spector (a treasured friend of the family). How this has escaped major media is beyond me…. Really reminds us of what holiday spirit is all about.
As a 12-year-old paper boy living in Maine, Morrill Worcester won a trip to Washington, D.C. It was his first time to the nation’s capital–and his first to Arlington National Cemetery, which made an indelible impression.
Many years later, as a successful businessman, those memories continued to resonate. [click here to continue…]

Yeah, I’m back at it, gushing about one of my favorite companies, MyEmma-—the über-cool-a-mundo email newsletter service that can do no wrong.
Hey, I said gushing, remember?
Anyhow, the big news today is free surveys, now offered a free service for all accounts. [click here to continue…]

They say “imitation is the highest form of flattery,” but c’mon. Seriously? Bill Richardson, governor of New Mexico, announces his idea–pick two stores, spend $25 each per month?
Color me crazy, but that sounds just a tad bit familiar.
Subtracting one store does not an original idea make, Bill.

This one’s for all the stationery store owners and graphic designers out there….
Do you consider yourself a font freak? Type junky? Ascender snob? Well, here’s your chance to prove your print savvy prowess–the quiz to determine, once and for all, if you really, truly know your stuff.
Welcome to the So You Think You Can Tell Arial from Helvetica? Quiz
I’m just saying right up front–I nailed 18 out of 20. So there. Bring it on.
Thanks to Ironic Sans for providing such a worth while time killer (says the once-professional-stationer).

I was actually beginning to write a rave review of a segment that aired on the Today Show a few moments ago…until I heard the tease for the following segment. In under 30 seconds, a heartfelt thumbs up turned to a pronounced thumbs down. [click here to continue…]

Thanks to WHSV-TV (ABC) in Winchester, Virginia for introducing The 3/50 Project to their local shoppers this holiday season. Overlooking the anchor’s misquotes (calling us The “thirty fifty” Project, followed by saying it’s $50 at three businesses each), the segment’s pretty good. Steven Glazier, the field reporter, got things back on track, then asked all the right questions when interviewing local business owners.
As for why locals pump $68 of every $100 back into their community economy versus the lower $43 from chains and big boxes, well… It’s not due to payroll, as the first retailer explained in the piece–everyone pays that. The big chasm comes from associated business expenditures and how post-payroll, post-tax revenue is handled at the end of the day. Truth be told, I think the gap is larger, but the fine folks at Civic Economics who research such things provide the 68/43 figures we rely on.
Get out there and spread the word, folks. There are still a lot of shopping days between now and Christmas…and a whole lot more than follow December 25th.
