Heads up: Facebook scam email making the rounds

FacebookDoes this look like something that’s sitting in your inbox? If yes, drop kick the thing into oblivion. It’s a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” scam to get your Facebook login info. Not legit, not from Facebook.

For those of you lovely trusting souls who respond to emails asking you to confirm your passwords or logins, here’s the deal–don’t follow the links provided. Instead. go to your browser, type the normal web address in manually, THEN log in. If there’s a legitimate update or security issue, you’ll be told at that point.

If not, well…consider yourself smart for having dodged a bullet.

In my case, the boneheads behind the Facebook hoax took a (wrong) guess at which of my business email accounts would likely have a Facebook page connected to it. That’s not uncommon; quite often, scammers will target email addresses like “customerservice@” and “info@,” with a better than 50/50 chance that email address is tied to Facebook or Twitter.

Best way to outsmart the little weasels? Create a non-public email address solely for all social media accounts. Use an address set up through Gmail, Hotmail, or similar to remove the obvious targets, then protect that email address like gold. Spoof emails like the one above will stick out like a sore thumb when they land in a mailbox that isn’t part of your social media plan.
