Economy

3-50-project-logo_500px2You emailed…you asked…you shall receive.

I’ve created bag stuffers a flyer for The 3/50 Project that can be easily printed on any color printer, from an $80 desktop to an $8,000 press. Just print, cut in half, and start slipping them into your customers’ bags.

Or better yet, hand them to your customers WITH their bags, with a big smile and personal thank you for shopping in your store. Who doesn’t like to be thanked for doing something nice, after all?

The bag stuffer flyer can be found online by clicking here.

3-50-project-logo_500px2A friend turned me onto a great piece about strengthening the local economy by patronizing local brick and mortars. Written by Rieva Lesonsky (Consulting Editor at BizWomen.com), the post titled “Support Your Local Small Business” touched my retail-lovin’ heart in a big way.

Her article sprang from a customer service-related experiment last summer. In that case, a guy decided to purchase goods and services only from businesses whose owners he’d met. Before long, he was frequenting the same three restaurants repeatedly, which inspired Lesonsky to twist the concept slightly, then consider the implications of her own shopping habits: [click here to continue…]

Enough with the carnage

in Economy, Media

meet_the_pressForgive me for just now catching this one. Haven’t had time to dig through the plethora of stuff on my TiVo.

Yesterday morning, Erin Burnett shared more of her concerns about the impact psychology has on consumers right now. According to the CNBC business news anchor, what we’re facing is really a two-part problem: the complexity of the markets, and…the negativity of the media.

cnbc_logoIn a recent Today Show interview, CNBC’s business anchor Erin Burnett was asked to explain the Wall Street chatter in layman’s terms, putting things into perspective. I mean sheesh…since when could you buy a share in a major oil company for less than a gallon of gas or pick up GE cheaper than a couple of 60 watt lightbulbs?

After explaining the realities of finance, Burnett made a keen observation familiar to storefront retailers everywhere, regarding the other piece of the puzzle: [click here to continue…]

See Oprah? It’s a bad plan.

by Cinda Baxter on March 3, 2009

in Economy, Real World

cbs_news_logoFrom CBS News:

Consumer spending drives 70% of the economy. When consumers put their wallets away, the economy has trouble making a U-turn.

[According to Jay Bryson, Global Economist, Wachovia Corp.], “If people just continue to clamp down and keep it clamped down for a long period of time, then it’s going to be more difficult to gain traction in terms of the recovery.”

And that recovery, when it finally comes, will be significantly weaker because Americans are saving more.

Did you hear that, Oprah? Seventy percent of our economy. Saving in the extreme is not a responsible solution.

Oprah, you’ve got it wrong

by Cinda Baxter on March 3, 2009

in Economy, Rant, Real World

oprahYesterday afternoon, a friend called, asking if I was near a television. “You’d better see this” was all the explanation she gave when telling me to turn on Oprah.

Having now watched the program, I’m almost as speechless.

Almost. But not entirely. Once I get started on her latest wide-sweeping suggestion, it might be hard to shut me down, so buckle in folks. I’m up on my soapbox, and I’m ticked off. [click here to continue…]

Lenox purchased at auction

in Economy, Vendors

dickens_pintThose of you who carry Lenox or Department 56 can breath a bit easier. A private equity group led by Clarion Capital Partners LLC purchased the company out of bankruptcy court this week, after the courts opened bidding for a second time.

Unlike the original deal with KPS Partners, the Clarion package includes the Deptartment 56, Dansk, and Gorham brands. The deal should close within the next month, with past Waterford CEO, Peter Cameron, at the helm.

Thank goodness. Those little amazons in the Dickens Village were getting nervous.
