Actually, one can do “both”… send a nice email and snail-mail a beautiful card. Redundant? Yes, but some may appreciate that.

And, if you’re sending a card, try to pick out an interesting appropriate postage stamp.
You couldn’t be more wrong Ms. Hirschfeld. Design, especially when it comes to invitations is all about what you’re holding in your hand. Many things may be replicated on the web; the act of experiencing a beautiful invitation that was sent directly to you, as opposed to in an e-mail blast, is not one of them.
