Reps, don’t do this

by Cinda Baxter on May 29, 2009

in Marketing, Reps, Vendors

spamI’ll be the first to raise my hand when it comes to endorsing the concept of “permission based marketing.” Bottom line is that you simply don’t add someone’s email address to a mailing list unless they provide it to you for that purpose.

Which is why I’m a bit steamed over the fact my personal inbox was hit with sales pitches yesterday. The first couple, I unsubscribed using the links provided, then sent a note to the vendors explaining why I’d done so, asking that they please not use that address. By the time the third fourth one appeared, however, the pattern surfaced. Marzipan, Evy Jacob, Fin + Roe, and Hen and Barley–the three four that sent uninvited e-blasts–shared a booth…and reps. Operation Nice

by Cinda Baxter on May 29, 2009

in Real World

How cool is this? I’m happy to send you off into the weekend on a positive note with a site that celebrates positive attitude…. As the founder, Melissa Morris Ivone, explains it:
.
Don’t you love it when people go out of their way to be nice? Like when someone waits to hold the door for you. Or when a stranger waves you into a line a traffic. Or even when a coworker shoots you a friendly smile along with a “have a nice day.” If everyone was a little bit nicer to the folks they encountered each day, perhaps the world would be a more pleasant place. Operation NICE was initiated to remind you that a little NICE goes a long way.
.

Hear, hear, sister.

Both consumers and business owners crave an upbeat message. They feel good, and they’re contagious. Just try smiling when you answer the phone; it’s amazing how that crazy little trick works; puts a whole new spin on the words that come out of your mouth (and don’t think the caller doesn’t hear it…they usually respond in kind).

Check out the Operation Nice blog here. And congrats on the Times article last Sunday, Melissa. Couldn’t happen to a nicer person.

mrs_strongThis one breaks my heart.

Mrs. John L. Strong is considered royalty in the fine stationery business…and has serviced royalty as one of the country’s oldest and most highly respected Professional Stationers.

When the Madison Avenue fixture closes, it will bring an 80+ year tradition to its conclusion. Sweet dreams, my lovely bespoke brethren. You shall be missed, deeply.

twitterThanks to my fellow Twitter-ites for helping carry the load during yesterday’s campaign to get facetime for The 3/50 Project with mass media. You guys really did us all proud, re-tweeting like pros as each subsequent wave rolled out.

The irony to all this is that I spent the day flat on my back, with either a horrid case of the flu or Memorial Day food poisoning (sadly, hamburgers and potato salad may be off my faves list for a while). Meant crawling to the laptop every so often to check in…tweet…crawl back to bed…crawl back to the laptop a few hours later…tweet…back to bed…. At one point, had the laptop IN bed with me, which is either an example of steely determination or complete insanity.

But then hey—I used to be a retailer. We’re half crazy by nature.

Now…let’s see how the media folks respond. Fingers crossed. Thanks to each and every one of you, including the non-Twitter users who posted about the campaign on their blogs, asking readers to jump in. Every one of you is a hero in my book.

On your marks, get set, TWITTER!

in Media, The 3/50 Project

twitterYou all know how determined I am to get national mass media coverage for The 3/50 Project. Well, today we’re going to try a little out of the box thinking.

If you’re a Twitter user, follow me at @cindabaxter, then look for TWO media-related tweets this morning (trust me…you’ll recognize them).

Got ’em? Good. Now re-tweet them. Both.

That’s it. That’s all you have to do. With a little luck, we’re about to start something big.

The first window clings arrive

in Media, The 3/50 Project

Share photos on twitter with TwitpicThanks to Nest Interiors in Ponchatoula, LA, we have our first peek at The 3/50 Project window cling in action. The Chicago Market began mailing them out late last week, thanks to quick action after a printer snafu. Gotta admit…they look pretty cool, huh?

Twitter fans, take note: Tomorrow morning, I’m launching a campaign to get us on some pretty big radar. Your retweets are critical to this working, so get set. I’m hell bent on seeing us hit the national mass media.

women_entrep_logoThe 3/50 Project is beginning to see some pretty big press, folks.

For those of you unfamiliar with Entrepreneur Magazine’s sister site, WomenEntrepreneur.com, you’re missing out on something special. Eve Gumpel, editor, has done a terrific job of bringing valuable information to female business owners across the country in a positive, upbeat tone. The content’s always dead-on, and worth a read.

Thanks to one of The 3/50 Project’s faithful supporters, Nina Kaufman (a small business attorney and advocate), Eve learned about our cause, and wrote a wonderful piece about the movement in her online column.

Be sure to bookmark the site. Should be on your daily Must Do list.

I gotta tell you, Jim Blasingame makes being interviewed fun. Thanks to his to-the-bone belief in small business, The 3/50 Project made its national media debut this week on his program “The Small Business Advocate,” syndicated in 40 major markets. He really “gets it,” big time.

To hear the interview in full, click on the “Listen Now” button in the top right corner of the blue box above.

Pay particular attention to the part about big boxes and banking. Was something that hadn’t occurred to me before, and won’t leave my head now. Sure puts things in perspective, fast.

Thanks, Jim, for being such a pro. You can count on me taking up the offer to stay in touch.
