Using Facebook to promote local businesses

Okay Facebook users. It’s time we start a little online wave. You know…kind of like we used to do in high school or college, but this time, no one has to stand up and put their arms in the air (or yell, but hey, if you’re so inclined…).

Are there three locally owned, independent businesses in town you love and don’t want to lose? Think: Someone who does not have a national or regional brand name, provides wonderful service and/or great product, with an owner who lives in your community? Here’s how you can help them out using Facebook:

1. Visit The 3/50 Project Facebook page

2. Look for the Project’s post asking “Do you love three locally owned, independent businesses?” that appeared around 11:00 a.m. CST on Saturday, 11/12/10

3. Click the Share link at the bottom of the post (critically important step)

4. A status update box will appear:

5. In the status box, type this, word for word, replacing my favorites with yours:

Three independent brick and mortar businesses–without a national brand name–I love and don’t want to lose:
Taste of India, Wave Salon, and Prestige Cleaners.
(Click SHARE, copy this message into your status update, then replace my favorites with yours!)

6. Click Share

Voila! Here’s what goes out to your friends and family (using your face and favorites, of course):

Now…whaddaya say we all jump on Facebook and begin spreading some small business love around?
