Thanks to WREX TV (NBC) for helping get the word out about The 3/50 Project; we sure do appreciate it!
These next few days may be a bit quiet on the blog, as I cruise the aisles at NSS, meet with press in New York, and sing the praises of independent business owners at The 3/50 Project seminar on Monday. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by!
Editor’s note: For some weird reason, the video player that’s embedded above shows up sometimes, then disappears others. Has to do with the servers on WREX’s end, not ours. It’s also fluttering in and out on their site, so…who knows….?
Heads up to those of you planning to attend The 3/50 Project seminar in New York on Monday–there’s a major (and I mean MAJOR in capital letters) national print publication planning to attend. Could mean face time for those of you whose stores are participating in the Project if he’d like an interview or two, so please be sure to register asap.

This could be it, folks…the mass media exposure we’ve been hoping for.
A packed house would really make this fly, so please be sure to put it on your calendar if you’ll be in the area that day. I’ll be sharing creative ideas that businesses around the country have been working with The 3/50 Project–should be a fun session.
Thought those of you who have so enthusiastically embraced The 3/50 Project would get a kick out of this photo. It’s from the portion of my presentation focused on the Buy Local trend.
Our moment in the sun didn’t stop in Hong Kong. See that camera on the far right, in front of me at the podium? That’s Dubai television, filming the seminar. Folks, we’re gone global.
I see that in my absence, you’ve been busy. We’re well beyond 3,000 registered supporters on the site, have more than 5,000 fans on Facebook, and have shown up in a plethora of newspapers and on some more television stations. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:
It’s voices like yours that give this thing life. Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it, folks. You rock!
Since this is the week of reminders, don’t forget that the first official seminar about The 3/50 Project is happening next Monday. Whether you’re new to the movement or an early adopter, I hope you’ll come to learn about where the Project stands now, and what other independent businesses have done to promote it with successful results.
Date: Monday, May 18, 2009, during the National Stationery Show
Time: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Location: Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, Room 1C02/03 (lower level)
Admission: Free, but must have a show badge or be a credentialed member of the press
Registration: Required (click here to sign up)
See you there!
A big thanks to our friends in Nashville for doing such a great piece about The 3/50 Project and a couple of the participating retailers in the area. Well done!
Do you know about a television station that’s done a feature piece on The 3/50 Project? Let me know and I’ll get their video up on the blog asap.
Been wondering if your listing on The 3/50 Project website has an impact? Check out what Sioux Falls, South Dakota photographer Chris Jacob has to say on KELO-TV news. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this…those listings work.
And just for the record-—east and west coast media types, you’re getting scooped by your midwest counterparts, big time. This is the second South Dakota t.v. station, in addition to three Minneapolis stations, and a Lincoln, Nebraska station who have featured The 3/50 Project on their news broadcasts. Whaddaya say you jump in and spread the love to the locally owned businesses in your coverage area too?
P.S. We don’t have a MySpace page, so please don’t go looking for it. Heaven knows, there’s plenty to keep up with between Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn already. You guys are keeping me on my toes!
As promised on Friday, today’s post is a continuation of my conversation with John Ranes, owner of The Frame Workshop in Appleton, Wisconsin. He earned his stand in the spotlight by signing up more supporters of The 3/30 Project than anyone else; what earned him a second post was his terrific insight into operating successful retail store.

I promised that whoever was responsible for the most registered supporters on The 3/50 Project website by midnight April 15th would be thanked by a moment in the spotlight here on the blog. Well folks, meet John Ranes, independent retailer (The Frame Workshop in Appleton, Wisconsin), who single-handedly brought in no fewer than twenty-five businesses…that we know of. Given the plethora of frame shops that came in around the same time, not referring to a specific person by name, something tells me twenty-five is shooting low.
What I didn’t expect was that the person who attained Rock Star Status would also be someone with so much business savvy and sage advice to lend other retailers of all types. The following interview shows incredible insight and brings wise reminders that are a pleasure to share. Given the amount of great material, today’s installment will be part one of two, focused primarily on The 3/50 Project. [click here to continue…]
