Facebook just became an open book…and all your posts went with it

facebook_iconAre you a Facebook user? Think your posts are only visible to people you’ve friended? Well, hate to break this to you, but as of yesterday morning…well…not so much.

Facebook now allows Google indexing. Translated into English? Whatever you write can end up in a Google search. Granted, most of us aren’t cranking out personal posts that would be of interest, but…sure would be a shame if you spouted off about a certain vendor you were frustrated with, then learned it was showing up when consumers searched for the same company.

To change this option and protect your posts:

  1. Log into your Facebook account
  2. Click Settings (upper right corner), then Privacy Settings
  3. On the next page, find the section titled Search, then UN-click the box labeled “Allow indexing”

No, Facebook isn’t warning people about this, and yes, by default, it’s set to index. Not cool, especially not in light of privacy issues as connected to sites requiring “friending” permissions.

Thanks to our friends at the Society of American Florists for the heads up on this one.
