Is Swoozie’s buying Blue Tulip?

swooziesAmidst the inevitable rumors that swirl during the gift show circuits, one keeps cropping up from numerous sources, in remarkably consistent form. While I haven’t been able to locate anyone with hard facts, it appears that Swoozie’s is buying at least a fair chunk of the Blue Tulip store chain.

Such a move would certainly touch the gift industry, but its larger impact would be on the stationery folks, making Swoozie’s a larger elephant in the room to contend with.

Do I believe the hype? Possibly. Numbers make the possibility a viable one, plus I’m hearing this from a lot of sources who have no connection to one another. Still….

As I explained to one vendor, rumors that fly during gift show circuits tend to have a 50/50 shot at accuracy. What begins at the first show can balloon into something completely different two shows later (unlike the Stationery Show, where the odds seem to track closer to 90% on target). Given how many people have identical information, however, this one might have legs.

Come February 1st (the supposed announcement date), we’ll know for sure.
